Introductions

New job, new blog, new country and another year as a nomad. This time the UK and northern Uganda...

Downsides of another year as a nomad:

  • More days being confronted by the grim realities of another conflict.
  • The deterioration of my already appauling diet as it becomes dominated by carbohydrates, vegetables, oil, very chewy stringy meat, tomato puree and Coca Cola.
  • Withdrawal symptoms from chocolate (life long addiction) and humous (recent addiction picked up from Middle East and Tesco), neither of which are readily available in northern Uganda.
  • More wasted hours in airports.
  • More likelihood I will be driven to take desperate measures like speed dating to meet someone in between trips overseas.
  • More likelihood family and friends will speculate that I am dysfunctional and will never settle down.

Upsides of another year as a nomad:

  • Having contact with the beneficiaries.
  • A stimulating environment full of challenges, learning and opportunities.
  • Experiencing another culture.
  • A more simplified life whilst overseas, without commuting consuming my mornings, TV consuming my evenings, and pressures to accumulate shiny new things consuming my savings.
  • A less pasty white complexion.
  • Less chance of seasonal adjustment disorder and hayfever.

Here's hoping the pros will outweigh the cons...
